11-year-old girl hosts charitable birthday party
An 11-year-old girl with a charitable heart decided to use her birthday to help others.
Avery Arrington, daughter of Alan and Katie Arrington, asked guests to her 11th birthday party not to bring gifts for her, but rather bring gently used or new clothing, shoes or accessories for Clothes To Kids of Haywood County.
Arrington heard about the organization from her Esther Circle at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville, which inspired her to use her birthday to give back to there.
As a result, several bags of clothing were delivered to Clothes to Kids of Haywood County by Arrington, her parents, and her friend, Lily Seymour.
Clothes To Kids of Haywood County, Inc. is a nonprofit with a mission to provide new and quality used clothing to low-income, school age children, free of charge.
Since starting in August 2013, Clothes To Kids has distributed more than 2,350 wardrobes. That means 6,642 pieces of new underwear, 6,820 pairs of new socks, and approximately 5945 pairs of pants in addition to other wardrobe pieces.
Clothes To Kids works closely with the Public School System. The social workers/counselors/teachers refer families — based on need and on attendance in classes — to make an appointment twice a year.
When the families come to shop, each child is able to pick out a school wardrobe consisting of three outfits, which includes three tops, three bottoms, a jacket or sweater, a dress, three pairs of underwear, three pairs of socks, a pair of shoes and three accessories. A winter coat is given in season.
