Ready to relive those glory days?

‘Gridiron Alumni’ football game to be played this spring

Are you ready for some football — alumni style? Ready to relive those glory days?
Gridiron Alumni executive Chris Hall, a former Tuscola High and Eastern Kentucky University standout, is renewing a new version of the greatest high school rivalry in the country when former girdiron standouts from Tuscola High and Pisgah High have agreed to faceoff in the spring of 2012.
One month ago, Hall put an announcement in the sports section of the Mountaineer and one month later, 75 former Black Bears and 48 former Mountaineers have signed up to relive the glory days of the County Clash.
“It’s going to be an amazing event,” said Pisgah Alumni Football Director of Operations Will Warren. “Within one month, we have more than 70 former players signed up to play. The plans right now are to play on a Saturday night in late April or early May. The date will be firmly set sometime in the near future.
“I was talking with one of their promotional directors about the rivalry. He asked me how many people really come to a Tuscola-Pisgah football game. I told him about 9,000. Some years a little more and some years a little less. He replied that ‘we could expect about 2,000 fans.’ I laughed and told him, ‘buddy, you really don’t know this rivalry and the folks in Haywood County. But you’re fixing to find out.’”
The inaugural Alumni County Clash will be played at Pisgah Memorial Stadium because according to the Gridiron Alumni rules, “the team that had 30 players registered first gets home field advantage.”
Coach Warren’s group surpassed 30 players in the first few days of registration. But that also means the 2013 alumni game will be played at Tuscola’s C.E. Weatherby Stadium.
If you or someone you know is interested in putting on the pads one more time, go to http://www.gridironalumni.com to register.
