Pisgah commemorates 9/11

CANTON — An American flag always flies over Pisgah High School, but yesterday it wasn’t just any Old Glory. In honor of 9/11, a large flag that had originally flown above a U.S. Navy destroyer stationed in the Middle East was hoisted above Pisgah for one day only.

A large group gathered to watch that morning as the school's Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets slowly presented, saluted and hoisted up the flag. Patriotic music played in the background, but other than that, there was a reverent silence, which continued even after the cadets had marched away from the flagpole.

For ROTC Commander Michael Weaver, the moment was special, and not just because of the solemn remembrance. He was instrumental in obtaining the flag, which was first donated to a school where he taught in Florida. ...
