CANTON — Every Sept. 11, Pisgah High School teacher Ashley Henson asks her students the same question — and gets a response many adults might find hard to fathom.

Do you remember 9/11?

"Honesty, nobody does," she said.

So, the civics and economics instructor does what many other teachers at her school and at schools across the country are doing. She teaches it.

And, yes, she explained, that does feel a little strange.

"I think it's huge that Sept 11th is quickly shifting from a current event to actually being history," she said.

While Henson, 25, can remember exactly where she was when she learned the solemn news (in dance class at Pisgah, actually), her students have nothing like that. For these sophomores, who were 3 or 4 when the towers fell, 9/11 has never been a shock. It's always ...
