A Cappella extravaganza at Lake Junaluska

Dec 04, 2013

A holiday a cappella extravaganza is coming to the Terrace Hotel, Lake Junaluska, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, when the Song O'Sky Show Chorus, the Land of Sky Chorus, and their quartets, take the Terrace Auditorium stage, presenting “A Season for Harmony."

Tickets are $15, $12.50 each for groups of six, or more; students of any age are free. See www.ashevillebarbershop.com.

This will be the first time since 2004 that these two area a cappella power-houses have shared the same stage, this year bringing holiday cheer in songs and comedy about Christmas, Hanukkah and life in general.

Song O' Sky Show Chorus, a Chapter of Sweet Adelines International, was founded in 1974 making them Asheville area's oldest, as well as only women's barbershop-style choral group. Their current membership includes women from five WNC counties. Sweet Adelines International is a nonprofit international women's organization with over 650 choruses worldwide.

Their Music Directors are Sherry Sprague and Betty Jean Parham (Assistant). Rehearsals are held on Tuesdays 6:45 to 9:30 p.m. at Covenant Community Church 11 Rocket Dr. Asheville, NC 28803.

All women over 18 who love to sing are invited to visit. It is not necessary to be able to read music; if you can carry a tune, they will teach you the rest. For more information visit www.songosky.org

Wendy Bell, Director of PR and Marketing said, “Rehearsing for this event with the men has been so much fun and we know our audiences will enjoy an evening that will celebrate the holiday season as much as we have enjoyed preparing for it.”

The Land of the Sky Chorus is a Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. The Chapter was founded in 1948 and currently has members from eight WNC and SC counties.

The Land of the Sky Chorus, directed by Kevin Kehres, performs an entertaining variety of harmony, comedy, visual vitality and audience participation—all aspects of Barbershop performance artistry. The Chapter inspires youth through educational outreaches and support for vocal music arts programs. These outreaches and programs develop music skills, build social self-esteem and feed positive energy into young people’s lives! The chorus recently performed with Voices in the Laurel’s in their Salute to America concert.

If you like to sing and are interested in harmony musically and in other enriching ways, you are warmly invited to harmonize with us in an open rehearsal any Tuesday, 7:30 PM at Westwood Baptist Church, 150 Westwood Place, Asheville. See www.ashevillebarbershop.com for directions, or call 866-290-7269 to find out about car-pooling from Haywood County.
