A happy songfest that won't last
RALEIGH — Over the next few weeks, expect to hear Republican Gov.-elect Pat McCrory and legislative leaders singing plenty of refrains of Kumbaya.
Don't expect it to last.
McCrory won a resounding victory on Tuesday night, beating Democratic Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton by nearly 12 percentage points. Legislative Republicans, meanwhile, stretched their majorities in the state House and Senate.
In the House, the GOP margin grew from 68-52 to as much as 77-43. Just three years ago, a 34-seat advantage for House Republicans was unimaginable
The election night wins for Republicans in North Carolina led to some predictable euphoria. After all, the GOP hadn't been in this position, controlling all of the major levers of state power, since the 19th century.
