Haywood Waterways is now selling “trout” to compete in their annual Trout Race. The event is a benefit for Haywood Waterways’ work to protect and improve local waterways for everyone. Proceeds will also benefit HeadStart’s work to assist children of low-income families and Trout Unlimited, Cataloochee Chapter’s veterans and youth education programs.

The race is part of PlottFest and will take place at 5 p.m. Sunday, 22, at the Maggie Valley Fairgrounds.

The “trout” are carved wooden replicas that will be released near the fairgrounds and race down Jonathan Creek to the finish line. The first six contestants across the finish line win a prize. This year’s prizes are a Balsam Range Spa package, courtesy of Balsam Spa; zipline and whitewater rafting passes from Wildwater; a golf package for four from Lake Junaluska Golf Course; a Wednesday gourmet picnic for two from The Swag; and a rain barrel from Haywood Waterways. Winners need not be present to win.

To adopt a “trout,” tickets are $3 each or two for $5 and can be purchased at the event or in advance at Smoky Mountain Coffee Roasters, located at 444 Hazelwood Ave, Waynesville; HomeTrust Bank, located at 800 Russ Ave., Waynesville; and Frog Level Brewing, located at 56 Commerce St., Waynesville. The ticket includes a 10 percent off coupon at the Maggie Valley Restaurant.
