For a child, the first day of school brings a familiar exhilaration — seeing old friends and trading summer stories; meeting new classmates and charming the teacher. Students confidently approach the new school year with enthusiasm.  For kids lacking the basics, such as a pair of tennis shoes, it can be a difficult transition to the new school year.

Altrusa International of Waynesville will be spearheading a drive to collect new tennis shoes for needy children in Haywood County.  School officials cite a pressing need for new shoes of all sizes, for children from kindergarten through high school.

Altrusa members will be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at Wal-Mart in Waynesville to accept donations of new tennis shoes or funds to support the cause.  Cash or check donations of any size will be welcomed to purchase additional shoes for the children. All shoes collected will be distributed by the Haywood County Schools Foundation to students in need by the start of the school year.

From now through Aug. 9, donations of new shoes may be dropped off at the Haywood County Schools Foundation, at: 1230 N. Main St., Waynesville, or at any of the following business locations:

— Be Well Western NC, 29 Forga Plaza, Waynesville

— Edward Jones Investments, 387 N. Main St., Waynesville

— HomeTrust Bank, 8583 Carolina Blvd., Clyde

— Kim's Pharmacy, 366 Russ Ave., Waynesville
