Altrusa's Soup and Cornbread Day is Jan. 17

The 20th Annual Altrusa Soup and Cornbread Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 17, at First United Methodist Church, 566 S. Haywood St., Waynesville

More than 1,000 dine in and take out meals of vegetable beef or potato soup, fresh cornbread, homemade desserts and beverage will be served from the church kitchen by club members.

Tickets cost $10for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger. Individuals or businesses may pre-order to-go meals for a scheduled time by faxing in a pre-order form, which can be founda t www.waynesvillealtrusa.org, “Service, “Soup & Cornbread.”

This is the only fundraiser held by Altrusa of Waynesville and all proceeds are donated to scholarships for Haywood County students attending North Carolina schools and East Tennessee State University.

The success of this event has provided more than $161,500 in scholarships to Haywood County students since 1991. The community and local businesses play a vital role in the continued success of this fundraiser.

Altrusa is an international nonprofit organization, which strives to make local communities better through leadership, partnership and service and their primary focus is literacy.

Altrusa International of Waynesville was chartered in 1980 and its members are passionate about service projects to benefit the community.

Such endeavors by members in addition to the scholarship fundraiser have included gifting kindergarten students with personalized books; donating items for a women’s health expo; providing care packages to support soldiers; recognizing vocational students with awards and a luncheon; and more.

To further assist Haywood County students, the members have collected shoes and school supplies in August.

Altrusa is open to those who sincerely wish to contribute to the betterment of their communities through volunteer service.
