On Friday, Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. City Lights Bookstore will host an evening of Appalachian poetry and music.

Hilda Downer, Kathy Ackerman and Jeff Hardin will share poems from recent works. In addition to poetry, accomplished fiddler, Meade Richter will play music with an Appalachian flavor.

Downer’s new book, Sky Under the Roof, is a look into the environmental and cultural struggles of the Appalachians. She is a long-term member of the Southern Appalachian Writers Cooperative and North Carolina Writer's Conference. For almost 30 years, she has taught in the Writing Program at Appalachian State University while serving as a psychiatric nurse.

Kathy Ackerman’s Coal River Road reveals the power of oral history and place, a connection to the stunted ancient hills of West Virginia that remains as primordial and profound as the poet's estrangement from that place.

Jeff Hardin teaches at Columbia State Community College in Columbia, Tennessee. He is the author of two chapbooks and one poetry collection, Fall Sanctuary.
