Angie’s dancers stand out at regional competition

The “Aces” and “Starz” students of Angie Henley and Hayley Leis at Angie’s Dance Academy in Clyde, recently participated in the Masquerade Dance Contest in Spindale.  They came home with many awards including several Judges’ Choice Awards for choreography, “Studio Spirit” and “Parade of Stars.”  The dancers were also presented with awards naming them the “Best of Show” for the entire contest.
Angie’s Aces consist of five groups, the T-Birds ages 8-10, Cadettes ages 10-12, Angels ages 12-13, Top Guns ages 14-17.  The Starz are made up of younger dancers (ages 6-7) who aspire to one day be in the Aces Performing Troupe.  They are judged along side other dancers from across the region on their dance ability, technical merit, routine choreography and stage presentation.  Angie’s Aces and Starz are under the direction of Angie Henley and Hayley Leis with assistance from Alanna Brookshire.
Listed below are the winnings of each individual group, solo, duet and trio from the Masquerade Dance Contest.
The Starz team received a High Gold rating for their tap routine “Gitchee Goo” as well as Third Place Overall Petite Recreational Large Group.  Their jazz routine “Happy Boyz & Girlz” received a High Gold rating. The Starz also performed a Hip Hop routine “KJ & the Lil’ Mamas” winning First Place Overall Petite Recreational Large Group with a High Gold Rating. Members of the Starz Team are Kennedy Barker, Krista Bradley, Ella Cody, Kellie Ferguson, Ava Flowers, Kolt Nelson, Grace Nickol, Allison  Setzer, Lily Turner, Maggie Webb and Emeri Wright.
The T-Birds group (pictured above) was awarded a High Gold rating for their tap routine “Sparkling Diamonds” as well as First Place Overall Petite Intermediate Large Group.  They performed a jazz routine “Party Girls” which received a High Gold rating.
The Cadettes team earned a Gold rating for their tap routine “Coal Mine”.  Their jazz routine “Niji (Color of the Rainbow)” also received a Gold rating.  Dancers in the Cadettes Team are Alexis Banks, Joshua Borges, Nicole Borges, Julianne Burgin, Laurel  Causby, Casty Eller, Sarah Grider, Kayla Justus, Addysen Kirkpatrick, Haley Manka, Jessica Matthews, Alivia Mehaffey, Allie  Roberts, Hannah Grace Shipman, Jaden Sutton, Kendall Warner and Delaney Wildcatt,
The Angels group (pictured above) was awarded a Platinum rating for their Jazz routine “Getting Over You” as well as First Place Overall Junior Intermediate Large Group. The Angels also received a Call Back Encore Performance for their jazz routine which invited the dancers to perform again as one of the best routines of the competition. The Angels also performed a contemporary piece “Flying Solo” which took home a High Gold rating and Second Place Overall Junior Intermediate Large Group.
The Top Guns team won a High Gold rating for their Jazz routine “Good Luck”.  This routine took home First Place Overall Senior Intermediate Small Group. The Top Guns also competed in the Contemporary category with the routine “Come to My Window” and received a High Gold rating for their performance.  This piece was named Second Overall Senior Intermediate Small Group and was honored with Choreography Award.  The Top Gun dancers are Kelsey Buckner, Maggie Christy, Sophia Ferrara, Halie Gillett, Michaela Hannah, Abby Heath, Scout Powell and Amanda Proffitt.
The Cadettes Small Group, Alexia Banks, Kayla Justus, Jessica Matthews, Jaden Sutton, Kendall Warner and Delaney Wildcatt performed a Tap routine to “Company B” receiving a High Gold rating and First Place Overall Junior Intermediate Small Group.   The Angels & Top Guns collaborated together to perform a tap routine “Robot Rock”. This piece was named First Overall Teen Intermediate Line and took home a High Gold Rating.
The Aces Hip Hop Team is composed of students from all the Aces Teams who performed “Game Over” and received a Platinum rating.  This dance was also honored with an Encore Performance Call Back.  
Soloists from Angie’s Dance Academy include Maggie Christy who performed a Modern solo to “Labyrinth” (High Gold) as well as a Tap routine “Should Be Dancing” (Platinum, Fifth Place Overall Elite Senior Solo).  She was also recognized by the judges in the Masquerade Student Parade of Stars.  Michaela Hannah performed an Open solo to “Hot Like Wow” and Contemporary solo to “People Help the People” both receiving a High Gold Rating. In the Junior Musical Theater category Alexia Kirkpatrick and Ciera Cogburn performed “I Enjoy Being a Girl” and “See What I Wanna See”.  Kirkpatrick received a Gold rating and Cogburn received a High Gold Rating.  Oliva Rich performed a jazz routine “What’s a Girl Gotta Do?” and took home Third Place Overall Intermediate Junior Solo with a High Gold Rating. Also in the junior category Kavender Grace Nelson performed a lyrical routine “Tiny Dancer” (High Gold) and an open routine “Check Me Out” (Platinum, First Place Overall Junior Intermediate Solo).  Nelson was recognized in the Masquerade Student Parade of Stars, and also received the “Steven Boyd Memorial Award”.
In the Tap category Montgomery-lee Bruce and Kentley Nelson performed “Faith” and “Whirly Girl."  Bruce received a  High Gold rating and Second Place Overall Junior Intermediate Solo.  Nelson received First Place Overall Intermediate Teen Solo with a High Gold Rating and was also named in the Masquerade Student Parade of Stars. Nelson also performed a Musical Theater solo “What you Want” and receive a High Gold Rating.  In the Lyrical category Amanda Proffitt danced “Wherever you will go” and received a High Gold rating and Second Place Overall Intermediate Teen Solo.  In the Contemporary category, Abigail Shoemaker  performed “Closer to the Clouds” and earned a Gold Rating.
Several of the students from the academy competed in the Photgenic contest. Ciera Cogburn and Delaney Wildcatt received a High Gold. Wildcatt took home the Overall Junior Photogenic Award. Kelsey Buckner and Michaela Hannah received Platinum ratings for their photos. Hannah took home the Overall Senior Photogenic Award.
Students at the Academy teamed up to perform in Duets and Trios.  Our youngest trio from the Academy was performed by Addison Wyatt, Ella Grace Cathey and Katelyn Francis entitled “Rock Starz” with a High Gold rating.  In the Junior Tap category Montgomery-lee Bruce and Thailer Pryor danced to “This Joint is Jumpin” and received a Platinum rating.  In the Jazz Category Jaycee Sutton, Dalli Hensley and Sierra Wood performed a trio “Lookin’ Good” and received a Platinum rating. Also in the Jazz category Scout Powell, Maggie Christy and Michaela Hannah performed a trio “Vanity” receiving a High Gold. Kentley Nelson, Ansley Goolsby and Kavender Grace Nelson performed an open routine to “Girls on Fire” and earned a Platinum rating, First Place Overall Intermediate Junior Duet/Trio and “Best of Show.”
