Annual charity bingo event to be Sept. 13

Everyone ready for some bingo should save the date of Sept. 13. The St. John the Evangelist Catholic Women's Circle will hold its annual "Baskets and Bags Bingo” charity event Friday, Sept. 13, at the Haywood County Fairgrounds. Doors open at 6 p.m. and bingo starts at 7 p.m.

The cost is $20 for 21 games. Bingo prizes include Longaberger baskets filled with goodies and Vera Bradley bags, plus many door prizes.  Prizes include themed baskets such as “Mountain Pride,” containing artisan jams and pickles from Waynesville company Copper Pot and Wooden Spoon; “Much Needed Coffee Break,” with a Mr. Coffee French coffee press, coffee from Smoky Mountain Roasters, and hand-made coffee cups from local potter Nancy Yocom; “Nothing but Nuts;” and “Breakfast Delight.”

According to co-chair Ann Simmons, the total value of the Longaberger baskets to be given at the event is $1,800 and the Vera Bradley bags are valued at $1,600.

“We never imagined that the bingo event would take off like it did after the first year, “ said Simmons. “People in the community asked for it — and they are so generous.”

There will be drawings for prizes of a Vera Bradley travel combo in the Provencal pattern, a Longaberger laundry basket and a Longaberger serving tray with liner. Drawing tickets are $2 each or $5 for three drawing tickets.

The event will include three special games; special are $2 each or $5 for all three specials.

Some of the organizations the bingo proceeds have helped include Haywood Christian Ministry; Haywood County Department of Social Services; MedWest-Haywood Hospice; The Open Door; KARE; REACH; The Community Kitchen; Good Samaritan Clinic; Mountain Projects; Camp Ability; Haywood Public Transit; and Meals on Wheels

Complimentary coffee and desserts will be served and other refreshments will be available for purchase. Children are allowed with paid admission.

Johanna Dewees, RN, nurse navigator with MedWest-Haywood, will be at the event's cancer survivor table, answering questions about cancer prevention and detection.
