In so many ways, Christopher Lile is just like his older brother Nathan Lile, who is a record-setting sophomore swimmer at Gardner Webb University.
The younger Lile is also academically gifted, highly motivated and driven to be successful.
However, the Liles are not exactly the same as there is one glaring difference. When Christopher Lile signed his national letter-of-intent with Gardner-Webb a week ago in a signing ceremony at The Mountaineer newspaper, it was not to be a swimmer. He signed to run for the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ track and cross country teams.
“Gardner-Webb is a great fit for me,” said Lile. “Coach (Brian) Baker’s philosophy is a perfect fit for me considering I just started running nine months ago. He will be able to help me reach my full potential. Then there is the fact I have been on campus many times with my brother Nathan. I am still relieved to finally decide where I am going to college next year. It’s a big weight off my shoulders. Gardner-Webb is a great school and a great opportunity for me.”
Like his older brother, Lile plans to double major in biology and psychology, while Nathan (Lile) is two years into his double major of philosophy/religion and computer science.
Lile, who competed for the Asheville-based Fast Twitch Track Club, is expected to make an immediate impact once he arrives on campus.
“He is untapped,” said his Fast Twitch Club Coach Brad Dobson. “He has low mileage, which is an asset for a young man with enormous potential. Tha is what drew the coaches to him. But Christopher has the tools to be successful. He is tough, very dedicated and driven..”
There soon will be three former local standouts playing sports at Gardner-Webb University. The Lile brothers and freshman Mahaila Irvin (Pisgah) plays for the softball team.
