Area churches began Lenten observances as they observed and celebrated Ash Wednesday, March 5.

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs 40 days before Easter. According to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the desert where he was tempted by Satan.
