Art camps starting at Cullowhee Mountain Arts

Jun 11, 2014

Cullowhee Mountain Arts has announced its 2014 Youth ARTS Program Schedule.

Held in the School of Art and Design on the Western Carolina University Campus, these annual summer arts camps allow young artists to explore a multitude of media and techniques while working toward an overall goal — and have a whole lot of fun in the process.

This summer’s two and five-day programs offer especially creative and educational experiences combining art making with script writing, costuming, staging and performance.

June 23 through 27 SCULPTED MASKS AND PERFORMANCE – For Ages 9-12

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — Tuition costs $225 - All materials included.

In this camp, children will learn to sculpt clay to form a character mask, and turn it into a wearable mask using  papier mache’ techniques.  The class will create a story, rehearse and perform the group’s original play, costumed in their sculpted masks.  This camp provides a great way for a child to gain confidence and work with others.

June 30 through July 3 — PUPPET MAKING AND PERFORMANCE – For Ages 5-8

9 a.m. – noon — Tuition costs $120 – All materials included.

Children love puppets. In this workshop, campers will learn to mold clay into their own puppet character. After decorating and clothing their puppet, the group will collaborate with their instructors to make up a story for their puppets. The puppet show will be performed on the last day for family and friends. Your child’s imagination will be sparked in this camp that combines an artistic and performance experience.

July 8 and 9 — “YOU ARE THE HERO” – For Ages 5-8

9 a.m. – noon — Tuition costs $60 – All materials included.

Invent your own Super Hero. Then use clay to create this 3-dimensional character and bring it to life with its own personality strengths and weaknesses.  Characters will “perform” in a 2-dimensional backdrop created by the campers using markers or watercolors.  Pictures of the character’s performance will create a storybook for each child to take home.

July 10 and 11 — “JETPACKS!” – For Ages 9-12

10 a.m. – 3 p.m. — Tuition costs $95 – All materials included.

This educational experience begins with discussing the space race and moon landings. Students will design their own exploration devices inspired by jetpacks. Inventors will be encouraged to consider how their jetpack will actually work, using the variety of materials available.
