ATM robbery suspect arrested
A Waynesville man believed to have robbed a woman at gunpoint at an ATM last week was arrested on Valentine's Day.
Robbie Lowe, 38, of Waynesville, faces two felony charges including robbery with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Sgt. Tyler Trantham with the Waynesville Police Department said a woman called police on Sunday, Feb. 9 around 6:30 p.m. and said a man came up behind her while she was using the Cash Points ATM on South Main Street. He threatened her with a gun and demanded money. After she complied, he fled.
Police immediately set up a perimeter around the area and searched for the suspect, whom the victim and several other witnesses described. After an unsuccessful search that night Trantham obtained video surveillance of the crime from the ATM.
"We were able to use social media and get a very positive response from the public," Trantham said.
Through investigation, detectives identified Lowe and arrested him at his home around noon Friday.
Lowe was recently released from jail following a 10-year sentence for a similar crime in Gaston County, where he was convicted of robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of a weapon of mass destruction and common law robbery.
He is scheduled to appear in court March 5.
