Voices in the Laurel Host Upcoming Auditions

Auditions will be held on June 3rd and June 10th for Voices in the Laurel. The organization is a Haywood County based non-profit choir for young people ranging from 1st grade through 12th grade from Haywood, Buncombe, Jackson, Macon and Swain counties under the direction of Martha Brown.  Voices in the Laurel is an authentic program that focuses on providing young people quality choral education in fun and innovative ways.  Ranging from all reaches of Western North Carolina, Voices in the Laurel choristers have the opportunity to participate in a wonderful choir experience starting in the first grade. The choirs of Voices in the Laurel develop healthy singing habits through rehearsals which focus on teamwork, leadership and introduces choristers to history and to the culture of the music they sing. Treble Makers is for 1st and 2nd grade singers. This choir is designed to instill a love of music at a young age and have fun in the process. Concert Choir expands to include singers in 3rd through 5th grades. This choir focuses on teaching choristers how to read music and appreciate choral literature in a fun and exciting way. Chamber Choir encompasses the talents of 6th through 12th graders and encourages the growth of their voices and an exposure to classic choral music as well as fostering a knowledge and appreciation for music of all cultures.

Voices in the Laurel will continue its music making as the new choir season begins in mid-August. The choir program consists of singers in 1st – 12th grades that are divided into three choral ensembles.  1st and 2nd graders may join without an audition.  Singers in 3rd through 12th grades must pass a musical audition.  Open auditions will be held from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. on June 3rd, 2014 and June 10th, 2014 at First Baptist Church (100 South Main Street) in Waynesville. Voices in the Laurel provides choristers the opportunity to participate in performance tours all over the world. Some of the places Voices in the Laurel has performed are: with the Asheville Lyric Opera at the Diana Wortham Theater, Charleston’s "Little Spoleto" Festival, opened for Dolly Parton in her Christmas show at Dollywood, with Ronnie Milsap at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, the National Anthem, at Atlanta Braves games, at a Cincinnati Reds game,  the Pacific Rim Children’s Choir Festival in Hawaii, the National Cathedral in Washington DC, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York, St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan, Westminster Abbey in London, Chartres Cathedral in France, Sydney Opera House in Australia, Madrid and Barcelona, Spain and the choir just returned from a performance tour to NYC where they sang at Carnegie Hall.
