Dr. Daniel S. Pierce, chairman of the history department at the University of North Carolina at Asheville will discuss his book "Corn from a Jar: Moonshining in the Great Smoky Mountains." In this new book, Pierce presents the complicated world of illegal liquor, what motivated hard-working farmers to participate in moonshining and the modern-day resurgence of the craft legally.
"It's important to understand this regional phenomenon as the product not only of individual choices, but also of deep-seated cultural, economic and social conditions that created a complex and shifting historical context in which the moonshiners plied their trade," Pierce said.
