Victoria Grasty, Allie Leatherwood, Makenzie Moore, author Monika Schröder, Olivia Ottinger, Rose Leek, Iris Howell, and front, Kalina Georgieva. These students were on this year's WMS Battle of the Books team.

The media center at Waynesville Middle School was very excited and honored to host Monika Schröder, children’s author, on March 20. She spoke to about 100 sixth, seventh and eighth graders who submitted applications to attend her workshop.

Schröder shared pictures she had taken while working in India that became the inspiration for her book, Saraswati’s Way.

Saraswati’s Way is also a NC selection on the middle school Battle of the Books 2012-13 list. She also provided writing tips to those students that are aspiring writers. Ms. Schröder has authored two other children’s books, My Brother’s Shadow and The Dog in the Wood. The Dog in the Wood is set in Germany at the end of WWII and My Brother’s Shadow setting is in Berlin in 1918. It was a very unique opportunity for students to meet an accomplished author and learn from her expertise.
