Ticketed educational and tasting event offers two sessions
The Asheville Brewer’s Alliance (ABA) will host the second annual AVL Beer Expo Saturday, Feb. 18, at The Venue, 21 N. Market St., in downtown Asheville.
The expo consists of two distinct sessions, the first from 1- 4 p.m., and the second from 5 -8 p.m. Attendees may come to one or both.
This event brings craft beer lovers together with ABA members — both breweries and those that work with the brewing industry. Hear them speak about their craft and the business of beer.
The two sessions will feature:
• More than 40 Western North Carolina breweries, each pouring a beer style that they feel best represents their brewery (New breweries Habitat and Hillman Beer will be sampling their beers for the first time ever. Special one-off brews such as Asheville Brewing’s collaboration with Deschutes Brewery will be pouring).
• Craft beer vendors, including materials and ingredients producers, distributors, and others that support the industry, will be hanging out as well.
• Educational panels featuring leaders in the beer community, discussing a variety of topics, including “Rising from the Grave: Resurrecting Beer Styles” (Session 1), and “Is it a Race? Breweries with Different Growth Plans Discuss Expansion,” featuring Tim Schaller, Wedge Brewing, Chris Frosaker, Hi-Wire Brewing, and Barry Bialik, Thirsty Monk Brewing (Session 2).
• Each session will feature a rare and special beer tasting that will be in addition to the beer token tastes. The Big & Bold Beer Tasting will feature Nantahala Brewing’s Bourbon Barrel-aged Chocolate Covered Cherry Stout (Session 2). While participants taste, they will hear from Oscar Wong, Highland Brewing; Erin Jones, Burial Brewing; and Joe Rowland, Nantahala.
The $30 ticket includes admission to one of the two sessions, a commemorative event glass, and five beer tokens that can be exchanged for 4-ounce samples. Additional tokens will be available for purchase.
Expo attendees are welcome to attend both sessions, but each requires a $30 per person ticket. AVL Beer Fan members will be able to stay in the Grand Tasting Hall between sessions for a behind-the-scenes experience. To become an AVL Beer Fan, visit www.avlbrewers.com/become-a-fan.
Local food vendors, including French Broad Chocolates, Hickory Nut Gap, Hop Nuts, and Roots Hummus will be on hand with free food samples throughout the day.
Tickets are available at www.avlbeerexpo.com and will be limited to 365 per session to maintain the intimate feel of the expo.
Parking is available downtown and at nearby City of Asheville parking decks; however, Expo attendees are encouraged to find alternate ways to get to and from the event.
The Asheville Brewers Alliance was formed in 2009 as a non-profit trade organization whose mission is to promote Asheville and Western North Carolina craft breweries and to exchange knowledge and support among members for the enrichment of the beer community.
