Balsam Range celebrated in Haywood County

A few years back, five Haywood County musicians got together to jam near Mingus Hill in Canton. They would have folks believe that they were nothing special — just front-porch music makers like hundreds of other pickers and singers in these hills rich with the reels of Appalachian fiddle tunes.
Marc Pruett, Buddy Melton, Caleb Smith, Darren Nicholson and Tim Surrett were their names.
"We didn't have any idea it would go anywhere," Surrett told an overflow crowd at Canton's Saturday night 'Mater Festival.
Those five friends became today's red hot bluegrass-and-more Balsam Range, wowing audiences across the country.  They were nominated in 2010 for International Bluegrass Music Association's Emerging Artists of the Year.  In 2011, they won the IBMA award for Song of the Year "Trains I ...
