Barbara Justice Segars, 64, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2017, at UNC Chapel Hill. With her children by her side, she left her broken body for the promise of eternal life. Barbara was the daughter of the late Rueben and Ila Justice, and was predeceased by the love of her life, Ronald Segars.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Ron Segars Jr. (Kristin) and Mary Segars Tefteller (Brad), and Natasha Tatum (Jon); grandchildren, Lily Tefteller, Brayden Segars and Makayla Tatum; brother Joe Justice; and uncle James Parris (Peggy).
Barbara was born and raised in Waynesville, and graduated from Tuscola High School, class of 1970. In 1973, she relocated to Wilmington and later met her soulmate, Ron. Together, they started Ron's Chimney Sweep and later Ron's Fireside Shop.
Mom's favorite thing was spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren. She was witty and funny and never met a stranger. She could start a conversation with anyone. (Literally, anyone!) She always put others needs in front of her own. She was the kindest person that walked this Earth.
Mom was a fighter, and during her 24-month battle, she gave it her all and then some. There were many dark days, but 95 percent of the time, she had a smile on her face. She endured things that would have made the strongest of men cry, but that was our mom. She was one tough lady. She never wanted to leave, but her body wasn't in agreement.
We will love and miss her for the rest of our lives. It's hard to forget someone who gave you so much to remember.
The family would like to thank the entire staff of the UNC Chapel Hill MICU and UNC Chapel Hill Pulmonary Department. Thank you for never giving up on our mom and being brutally honest when it was necessary. Your kindness and support will never be forgotten. Also, thank you to Dr. Steven Klein for being by our side and answering the millions of texts and phone calls we sent over the course of 24 months.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Lung Association or the New Hanover County Humane Society.
A memorial service will be held at 11a.m. Saturday, March 11, at Andrews Mortuary, 1617 Market Street, Wilmington. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the service hour.
