Barbara Shaw Welch
1926 — 2014
ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA — Barbara Shaw Welch, a longtime resident of Alexandria, Virginia, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014.
She was raised in Nutley, New Jersey, and was a loving wife to Samuel C. Welch of Waynesville until his death in 1969. Barbara was a graduate of Duke University; she taught for 17 years at the Alexandria Hospital School of Nursing and was a direct descendant of Colonel Robert Love, founder of Waynesville. Besides her devotion to her family, she was a popular presence in the Waynewood community and the Stratford Women’s Club.
She was a loving mother of Douglas, Rick, Tom and Mary; an exceptionally devoted grandmother to her seven grandchildren, Conor, Devin, Katherine, Andrew, Sam, Joe and Marco; and a dear friend to so many; her smile, sense of humor, her strength and positive outlook were cherished by all who knew her.
A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 17, at Green Hill Cemetery, where she will be buried next to her husband. Father Larry LoMonaco will officiate. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. prior to the service at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
