Be a sweetheart; help feed the hungry this Valentine’s Day

Feb 04, 2014

The Mast General Store in Waynesville, Hendersonville, and Asheville is partnering with MANNA FoodBank on Feb. 8 and 9 to fill its larder with food.

The annual Be a Sweetheart, Feed the Hungry event matches each pound of candy purchased with a $1 donation to help ensure that those in our community needing a good meal will have access to enjoying one.

“It is amazing what our local food banks can do with just a little," Fred Martin, president of the Mast Store. "Thinking of your sweetheart and giving a gift of just one pound of candy can help purchase 5 pounds of food for someone in need.”

Hunger is not discriminatory and is not just an issue within the homeless community. MANNA FoodBank serves a 16-county area in Western North Carolina and has over 200 partner agencies. Over the last year, based on reports from those partners, the need being filled by this organization has grown because of cutbacks in several government programs, like SNAP, and the lack of family-sustaining opportunities for able-bodied adults.

Each dollar donated to the MANNA FoodBank provides three meals. It’s proof positive that even a small donation can be turned into a lot of food for our neighbors.

"Everyone loves to share a sweet-especially around Valentines Day,” says Becky Upham, MANNA’s communications director. “We appreciate Mast General Store making it possible to share some love with the greater community at the same time.”
