Attention all you animal lovers, once again it’s time for Sarge’s Annual ‘Dogs & Suds’ fun-raiser — a chance to lift your spirits and lift a glass (or three) of good craft beer.

After the winter and spring we have had, I don’t know about you, but I’m certainly ready to put the doldrums behind and celebrate all the good work Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation does in Haywood County — with sausages and beer.

And what better place to gather than Haywood County’s first craft brewery — Frog Level Brewing Company? This will be the third year for Dogs & Suds at Fog Level, where Sarge’s has found a good home. (Boy, they are good at that.)

FLBC’s brewmaster/owner, Clark Williams and his wife, Jenny, are dedicated pet owners. In addition to their two hairless cats, the Williams have a shelter dog named Annie and a Mountain Cur named Tula, who was adopted from Sarge’s.

And it also just so happens that Clark’s nickname — a throwback to his days in the U.S. Marine Corps — is ‘Dawg.’

If you haven’t been to ‘Dogs & Suds’ in the past, this is your year. As they say, “The third time is a charm,” so Sarge’s is stepping things up. In addition to your choice of one pint of great FLBC craft beer, you can feast on an upgraded selection of ‘dogs’ — locally produced, handcrafted sausages, hot links, bratwursts and more, provided by Haywood Smokehouse. Also included is a choice of sides and dessert.

Entertainment for the evening (other than my brother) will be provided by the Sweet Claudette band from Asheville. Sweet Claudette is made up of members of regional favorites The Honeycutters, Now You See Them and The Moon and You.

Sweet Claudette's sound is powered by 3- and 4-part harmonies, Motown-inspired backup vocals, and acoustic instruments — cello, banjo, melodica, guitar and hand percussion.

I am told that their show is collaborative, energetic and entertaining.

All in all, this year’s Dogs & Suds promises to be Sarge’s best spring celebration ever. And let’s not forget that all the money raised goes to further Sarge’s efforts to save as many dogs and cats as possible from the county shelter and place them in foster homes until they can be adopted.

So mark your calendar for Thursday, May 15, from 6 to 9 p.m. and bring the whole family. (Parents, that way you get extra beer.)

Tickets for Dogs & Suds are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased at Sarge’s Adoption Center, 256 Industrial Park Dr., Waynesville; Mountain Dreams Realty, 3457 Soco Road in Maggie Valley; Smoky Mountain Dog Bakery in downtown Waynesville and Frog Level Brewing Company.

The sponsors for this Dogs & Suds this year are Frog Level Brewing Company, Haywood Smokehouse and Smoky Mountain Dog Bakery. On behalf of pet owners everywhere, “Thank you.”
