ASHEVILLE — Betty McElroy Williamson, 86, passed away after a long, challenging struggle with dementia March 24, 2014. Betty was born to the late Samuel and Selma McElroy of Lake Junaluska. She graduated from Waynesville Township High School and later wed George Tate Williamson, with whom she shared 44 years of marriage before his death in 1994. She is also preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Messer, of Lake Junaluska and Norma Jean Newman, of Canton.

An enthusiastic homemaker and excellent cook, Betty often entertained with special dinners for family and friends. She enjoyed a wide range of music, from opera to bluegrass. Among the many activities she participated in regularly were a daily hour-long walk and frequent bridge games with her dear friends. She was a lifelong Methodist, making the First United Methodist Church of Waynesville her spiritual home for over 50 years.

Betty is survived by two loving children, Julia Williamson, of Asheville, and Wesley Williamson, and wife, Caroline Brown Williamson, of Waynesville. And she was the very proud grandmother of Grace Williamson of Raleigh. She is also survived by her brother, Sam McElroy, of Asheville; her niece, Vickie Grogan, and husband, Harry, of Weaverville; and her grandnieces, Traci Mathews, Holly Mathews and Carrie Mathews, of Asheville. Additionally she leaves behind nieces Myrna Campbell and Susan Michael, and nephews Dan McElroy, James Robert Williamson and Richard Williamson.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 27, in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations. Interment will follow at Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park.
