Birdie W. Powell
CANTON — Birdie Wood Powell, 87, of the Cruso Community, passed away Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016, at her residence.
A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Seth Crawford and Grace Rogers Wood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Hayes Powell, Sr.; a daughter, Christine Hendrix; two brothers, Gerald Wood and Tom Wood; three sisters, Kay Penland, Linda McCracken and June Trantham. She was a dedicated member of Living Church of Jesus Christ of Cruso and was also a charter member of Cruso United Methodist Church. She was co-owner of Powell’s Exxon. Birdie loved everyone, having never met a stranger. Her family was her life. She was a selfless, caring mother who instilled godly values in her children and grandchildren. An intelligent lady, Birdie was an avid reader and was well read in a variety of subjects. She enjoyed gardening, was a wonderful cook and loved her animals.
Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Penny Swanger and husband, Danny, of Bethel and Martha Kay Rhodes and husband, Roland, of Canton; four sons, Hayes Powell and wife, Helen, of Irvine, California; Gary Powell and wife, Mary Ellen, of LaGrange, Georgia, Alan Powell of Cruso and Ted Powell and wife, Sandy, of Cruso; a sister, Lucille Czarnecki of Clyde; 13 grandchildren, Jennifer Shuping, Nathan Powell, Kate Sawyer, Scott Powell, Amanda Reel, Gene Swanger, Laura Feidler, Matthew Moore, Joshua Moore, Nicole Jamison, Brent Powell, Nathaniel Hoglen and Amber Edwards; 15 great-grandchildren many nieces and nephews and special caregivers, Betty Jo Ruff, Anita Green and Juanita Trull.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016, in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Rev. Bobby Haney officiating. Burial will follow at Long’s Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
