Block Party, Kids on Main offers Labor Day weekend fun
The annual Block Party and Kids on Main offers fun for everyone Saturday, Aug. 31 during Labor Day weekend.
The official Rockin’ Block Party kicks off at 7 p.m. with three live bands and dancing, with many restaurants and shops open later than usual. The 96.5 House Band, Fall Creek, and Wilhelm offer a variety of music for everyone. Prior to the Block Party, Kids on Main will provide kid-friendly craft activities focusing on families with young children from 6 to 7 p.m.
Sixteen businesses in the Main Street area will provide a full hour of fun during Kids on Main. Children will be able to color birds at Pleasant Places; chalk it up at Pink Regalia; make book marks at Mast General Store; enjoy free popcorn and a newspaper craft at The Mountaineer; participate in fun acrylic art at Earthworks Gallery and pencil art at T Pennington Art Gallery; get temporary tattoos at Affairs of the Heart; make block print cards at Twigs & Leaves Gallery; design a macaroni necklace at Cheddar Box; make a solar system in the Village Framer; color sheets in the Visitor’s Center; taste grape juice in a wine glass at The WineSeller; and enjoy many more activities.
Tom the Balloon Man and FunShine Faces will be designing balloon animals and painting faces all evening.
In addition to the crafts, hot dogs will be served by Waynesville Police; Blue Ridge BBQ will feature $1 sliders and kids color pigs; and $1.99 kid’s dinner specials will be at Nick & Nate’s Pizzeria.
The local organization Clothes to Kids will also be on Main Street. Visit their booth and find out how to donate much needed clothes for Haywood County school children or sign up for an opportunity to volunteer.
Come early, eat and play downtown. To join the fun, families are encouraged to look for a display of red balloons on Main Street where they will be given a map of participating businesses and activities.
The Downtown Waynesville Association, which plans and coordinates the Block Party each year, incorporates Kids on Main with the help of downtown businesses in an effort to make attendance easier for young families with early bedtimes. As always, people of all ages are welcome to stay through the entire Block Party to enjoy the entertainment.
