Bob Hill's legacy lives on
When the Haywood Community Band performs its final concert of the 2012 season on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 4, at First United Methodist Church in Waynesville, the enthusiastic spirit of its founder Bob Hill will be present.
The 3 p.m. concert is a memorial to this remarkable Haywood County resident who left a living legacy of music for the community to enjoy.
When Hill and his wife, Elaine, arrived in Haywood County from Wichita, Kansas, in 2001, he looked around and found no group of musicians gathering to play familiar marches, show tunes, standards, and swing as was common in his native Midwest.
Hill had played piccolo in bands throughout his life, including a military band he organized at his stateside post before going overseas during military service in World War II.
