Loving Father and Grandfather
CANTON — Bobby Joe Mease, 84, passed away Monday, Dec. 24, 2012 at the Elizabeth House.
A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Grover and Jessie Williams Mease. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Edith Donaldson Mease, who died in 2003; two brothers, G. C. and Carrell Mease; and two sisters, Ruth Ryder and Hilda Cagle.
He retired from Champion International with 44 years of service as a machine tender on No. 20 machine. Bobby Joe played an entire career with the Y Softball Club of Canton which spanned more than 20 years from 1948 to 1968 as a fast pitch catcher. His team made all-state several times and he was the leading hitter in state tournaments in 1949 and 1950. Bobby Joe was inducted into the N.C. Softball Hall of Fame Jan. 30, 1999. He was a United States Army veteran serving in World War II.
He is survived by two daughters, Shirley Parham and her husband, Jimmy, of Fletcher and Debbie Huskey and her husband, Gary, of Apex, N.C.; two brothers, Kenneth and Buford Mease, both of Canton; a sister, Adeline Ballard of Canton; three granddaughters; a grandson, two great-grandsons; and two great-granddaughters.
Graveside services were held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at Morning Star Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
