In November, more than 70 people mingled at Bosu’s Wine Shop in Waynesville to swirl, sniff, sip and savor four wines Bosu’s selected for the holidays. The event was held for FUR (Feline Urgent Rescue of WNC, Inc.) to raise funds for the ongoing construction of a sanctuary for almost 40 cats in the group's care. The event was a success, raising more than $1,755 from the individuals who attended and the local businesses that provided sponsorships.

“I’ve never seen so many people at one time in the shop before — and so many smiling faces," said Bob Dune," owner of Bosu’s. "We all had a wonderful time.”

Volunteers from FUR were on site answering questions about the new sanctuary.

“What a fun venue for a fundraiser," said Rachel West, FUR president. "We are thankful for the many supporters who came out to show their love of wine, love of cats  — or both.”

As guardians of displaced felines, FUR’s mission is to provide a safe haven for displaced cats by filling a gap in the rescue community as a last resort sanctuary. In doing so, FUR reduces the homeless population, which reduces the shelter’s euthanasia rates. In 2013, FUR helped more than 200 cats by providing assistance with medical needs for cats of unable homeowners, aiding in TNR, fostering cats and kittens, finding permanent homes for displaced felines and assisting with medical care and food for feral colonies in the community.

FUR consists of volunteers who share a passion in placing homeless cats in loving homes, in giving compassionate care to unadoptable cats, and in assisting and supporting feral colonies and their caretakers with food, shelter and medical needs.

Help is needed to continue with the construction of the sanctuary. To volunteer, call Bob West at 321-652-0009.  Volunteers are also needed to help care for the cats.  The contact person for this is Rachel West at 321-266-5759 or Kathi Wells at 356-4998.

Donations may be sent to FUR, P.O. Box 1352, Waynesville, NC 28786.

FUR is planning another wine tasting in the spring. Visit Bosu’s Wine Shop at 138 Miller St. in Waynesville for advice on pairing meals with wine or call the shop at 452-0120.
