Canton/Waynesville — Walter Bryce Penland, 71, of Waynesville and a former resident of Canton, passed away Monday, Aug. 19, 2013.
Bryce was born July 7, 1942 in Buncombe County to the late Walter Blake Penland and the late Lois Genevieve Wright Penland. He made his home in Haywood County for the past 40 years and was a United States Army Veteran. He was a member of Ridgeway Baptist Church. Bryce was employed in the construction industry and retired as a construction project manager. He was indeed a talented carpenter and homebuilder. Bryce had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh. His friendly personality and practical jokes will always be remembered by friends and family. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and his precious memory shall be cherished forever and in the words of his family, "He was the nicest person you will ever know."
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin brother, Bruce Penland.
Surviving are his loving wife of 37 years, Linda Mills Penland of Waynesville; his sons, Bryan Penland of Buttelborn, Germany, Eric Penland of Buttelborn, Germany, Shalako Penland and his wife, Tammy Penland of Mocksville and Billy Shane Penland and his wife, Janice Penland of Candler; six grandchildren; a brother, Blake Penland, Jr. and his wife, Shirley Penland of Candler; a longtime friend, R.B. Mixon of Moncks Corner, South Carolina; and a former daughter-in-law and friend of the family, Kathy Wyder of Sylva.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23 in the chapel of Crawford/Ray Funeral Home. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral service.
