Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather

WAYNESVILLE — Burton Phillips, 80, of the White Oak Community, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at The Homestead.

A lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Elbert and Ota Sutton Phillips. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Nora Ball; daughter, Rita Karen Phillips; and three sons, Roy, Troy Jeffrey and Donald Blake Phillips.  Burton was employed at Haywood Oil for 16 years and loved to fish and was a wonderful handyman. He was a member and served as a deacon at White Oak Baptist Church.

Burton  is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sara “Tiny” Hunter Phillips; one daughter, Julie (Zachary) Lutz, of Candler; three sons, Larry (Donna) Phillips, Steve (Kathy) Phillips and Mike (Sissy) Phillips, all of the White Oak Community; three sisters, Lorena (Keith) Smathers, of Canton, Colene Rogers, of Waynesville, and Corena (Fred) Henline, of Clyde; seven brothers, Elmer (Betty) Phillips, of Hendersonville, Tennessee, Ernest (Francis) Phillips, Jack (Carol) Phillips, Beecher (Ann) Phillips, Mitchell (Suzie) Phillips, all of Waynesville, Zeb (Mary Emma) Phillips of Burnsville, and Kelly Phillips of Dandridge, Tennessee; granddaughters, Joni (Chris) Payne, Melanie (Aaron) Hawkins, and Alex Rich; grandsons, Matthew Phillips, Justin (Sarah) Phillips, and C. J. Rich; three great-grandchildren, Ashley and Sara Holland and Gabriel Hawkins.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 15,  at White Oak Baptist Church with the Revs. Maurice Sheehan, Gary Putnam and Charles Shaver officiating.  Burial will follow at White Oak Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers will be C. J. and Ken Rich, Justin, Matthew, and Andy Phillips and Leslie and Jeff Hunter.  Honorary pallbearers will be Burton’s Sunday- School Class.  The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. prior to services at the church.
