Canton artist wins national award

Artwork by: Barbara Walker Barbara Walker, who hails from Canton, is the 2012 recipient of the Colonel J. Morales Memorial Award for "SilverPass," her oil painting. The award was given by the American Artists Professional League in New York City.

Canton resident Barbara Walker is the 2012 recipient of the Colonel J. Morales Memorial Award for her oil painting "SilverPass" from the American Artists Professional League in New York City.

Previously the painting was featured in American artist magazine "Realism Today" and exhibited at John Pence Gallery in San Francisco. It also the won top award at the American Landscape show of Peter Loftus in Santa Cruz, California.

Walker's husband, Joseph Russ, is also represented in the American Artists Professional League's 84th Grand National Exhibition with his painting "Expectation."  It depicts a girl holding a Seurat umbrella on Main Street in Hendersonville.

Both artists were recently inducted as Fellows to the AAPL in New York and received their Masters in Fine Arts from State University of New York in 1975.
