Canton Lions Club Award Two Scholarships to Pisgah Seniors
The Canton Lions Club hosted another successful scholarship dinner at Pisgah High School on May 22. The dinner has become a tradition in Canton to honor deserving Leo Club members of Pisgah High. The Pisgah Leo Club is a student service organization whose goals are to promote service to the community. This year, two outstanding students were selected to receive college scholarships for their outstanding leadership skills and service: Sydney Metcalf and Will Hargrove.
Sydney received the Bill Churm Memorial Scholarship. Sydney received the Bill Churm Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is given in grateful memory of the legacy of Lion Bill Churm who served the Canton community with pride. Mrs. Anita Churm, widow of Bill, was present to greet Sydney with the award at the dinner. Sydney is the daughter of Steve Metcalf of Candler and Darla Metcalf of Canton. Syndey will be attending UNC-Charlotte. She is a member of the National Honor Society, has participated in Tennis and Golf at Pisgah, started a student-led helping organization called TEENS (Teens Enriching Every Neighborhood ), been active in East Fork Baptist Church youth group, and served as Leo Club President this year. She hopes to go into the nursing profession.
Joining Sydney as a scholarship recipient was Will Hargrove. Will received the Al Cline Scholarship. Lion Al Cline has been a tireless supporter of our community. He is Pisgah High School’s biggest fan, and is a fixture in the Canton community. The Lions Club is grateful that Lion Al could present Will with his scholarship.
Will is the son of Tracy and Ronda Hargrove of Canton. He will be attending NC State University. Will is a member of the National Honor Society, served as a Junior Marshall, and participated in JV and Varsity Basketball, JV and Varsity Baseball, and Varsity Soccer while at Pisgah. He has been active in leadership in the community and in the youth of Oak Grove Baptist Church all while serving as Vice-President of the Leo Club this year. Will plans to study engineering at NC State.
The Canton Lions Club would once again like to thank the entire community for supporting this wonderful cause. The Club would also like to express its thanks to Sid’s On Main, who provided the wonderful supper so that these scholarships could be given to these two outstanding individuals. We wish them well in their future endeavors!
The Canton Lion Club is one of the oldest service organizations in the county and supports charities, non-profit organizations, governmental organizations and schools throughout the county. While the primary goal of Lions Club International is the eradication of preventable blindness, the Canton Lions Club focuses much of its efforts to help the needy in the community.
