A Canton man has been arrested on several sex-related charges involving two children in his care.

The case against James Daniel Sawyer, 33, began Oct. 8 when Canton police followed up on a case referred to them by the Department of Social Services.

One of the children's doctor filed a report with DSS after a checkup revealed signs of abuse. Both child victims in the case are younger than 10 years old.

"Due to the sensitive nature of this case we are limited to what we can share at this point," said Sgt. Shawn Gaddis with the Canton Police Department.

He believes the activity had been occurring on and off for at least the last eight to 10 months.

Sawyer was arrested Oct. 10 and charged with felony rape of a child, five counts sex offense, five counts indecent liberties with a child and four counts sexual offense with a child. He was jailed under $500,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in Haywood County District Court Nov. 11.
