Canton man charged with murder of 4-year-old son
A 24-year-old Canton man was charged Friday evening with murder and felony child abuse following the suspicious death of his 4-year-old son, Jake Russell.
Michael Swayngim, of Chipperwood Park, called 9-1-1 around 8 p.m. Thursday about his son, who was limp and unconscious, but still had a pulse, when emergency workers arrived said Det. Tony Cope with the Haywood County Sheriff's Office.
Russell was airlifted to Mission Hospital and died shortly thereafter.
The nature of the child's injuries have not been released, but a rushed autopsy is being performed, Cope said.
Swayngim was initially charged with possession of a firearm by a felon after detectives found several weapons in the home, but he was released on bond later that night.
