Canton Middle wins BRC championship
Black Bears secure perfect season after beating Brevard Middle in Blue Ridge Conference Championship game
BREVARD — The Canton Middle School football team wasn’t satisfied with being just the Blue Ridge Conference West Division champs.
Oh no! The Black Bears were greedy and wanted it all.
And they won it all.
Canton Middle took down East Division champion Brevard Middle, 18-6, in the BRC Football Championship game Thursday night at Memorial Stadium.
The Black Bears also finished with a perfect 8-0 record, while the Blue Devils ended their season at 6-2.
Canton Middle did all its damage in the first half as Isaiah Fisher scored on a 61-yard run with 1:22 in the first quarter and Devin Dockery bolted for a 54-yard TD run in the second quarter with 6:19 remaining.
That was all the Black Bears need as their defense played outstanding.
“We knew that Brevard offense was going to put pressure on our defense. I am so proud of these guys. We have good leaders and every kid gave 100 percent, said Canton Middle Head Coach Caleb Simmons. “I have to give credit to Brevard because they are a well-coached and talented football team.”
In the second half Fisher’s 48-yard TD run was called back because of a penalty. With 2:03 left in the championship game, the Blue Devils scored on a one-yard run.
CMS recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock.
Fisher and Dockery finished with 137 yards rushing and one touchdown each.
