Jason Burrell will be Canton's new town manager.

The board of aldermen voted unanimously to promote Burrell effective May 13, pending negotiations of his employment contract.

Burrell has served as the assistant town manager for Canton for the last seven years and was in the running for town manager last time the position was open. He was skipped over for the promotion when the town brought in current Town Manager Seth Hendler-Voss.

Hendler-Voss announced last month that would resign to pursue a new career opportunity in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Although Hendler-Voss's original departure date was set for May 31, he is now scheduled to work his last day in Canton on May 12.

The vote to promote Burrell came after a closed session which lasted about 45 minutes. Although the closed session ran longer than anticipated and Burrell was called into the room and subsequently dismissed on two occasions, the decision to promote him was unanimous.

"Good things come to those who wait," Alderwoman Carole Edwards said following the vote.

Although there were some kind words for Jason, his words were few:

"I do love this town."
