Canton teen dies in wreck
Joseph William Treadway, 16, of Canton, died in a car wreck in Madison County on his birthday, July 4.
Treadway was a passenger in a car driven by Colton Eugene Whitted, 16, also of Canton.
Sgt. Mike Henley of the N.C. Highway Patrol, said the accident happened on a rural, gravel road in the Madison County area of Max Patch.
The two boys were heading back from a fishing trip when Whitted’s vehicle overturned on the road’s edge.
The preliminary investigation shows that neither speed or impairment were issues.
“The road was wet, it was raining and it appears the vehicle got too close to the edge of the road and overturned,” Henley said. “Neither were wearing seatbelts, and Treadway was ejected from the vehicle, which rolled on top of him.”
Whitted, whose parents were following behind, sustained minor injuries.
Treadway was the son of Angie Treadway and Bob Treadway, both of Canton. He was a rising junior at Pisgah High School.
The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, at Bethel Baptist Church.
Memorials may be made in Joseph’s memory to Team Treadway (to help with Tyler’s hyperbaric therapy), Champion Credit Union, 1 Academy St,, Canton.
Joseph was the younger brother of Tyler, who suffered from serious brain damage in 2010 that left him unable to walk or talk on his own. Joseph had dedicated his life to Tyler’s recovery.
Counselors will be on hand at Pisgah in the next couple of weeks to help fellow students through this difficult time.
