A hands-on litter pickup, sponsored by the Commission For a Clean County (CCC), took place Saturday, May 10.  With 20 volunteers, it was a huge success.

The pickup stretched out along 276 South, from the Pigeon Community Development Center to about a quarter mile south of Raccoon Road; Oakdale Road and Craven Street also were included.

Narrowly beating the rainstorm that began later that morning, the group picked up 26 orange bags full of trash.

The CCC, an environmental cleanliness board, performs this service for each town in Haywood County and for a county road. The group works from May through September or October, depending on weather.

The season’s present schedule for pickups is June 14, Canton; July 12, a county road; Aug. 9, Clyde; and Sept.13, Maggie Valley. Depending on the weather in October, the group may be available for special requests.

For information about the CCC, call Dr. Bill Skelton at 456-3575 or JoAnna Swanson at 452-1550.
