Christ’s Servant for Life

CANTON — Charles Delain Chambers, 80, passed away Monday, May 12, 2014, at Silver Bluff Nursing Home.

A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Baxter Charles and Vella Whiteside Chambers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a baby daughter, Elizabeth, and a brother, the Rev. John Chambers.

At the age of 6, Charles moved to Swain County and graduated from Swain County High School where he played football and earned All-Scholastic Honors.  He attended North Carolina State University from 1953 to 1957 and graduated with a degree in agriculture.  Charles was drafted into the U.S. Army, twice serving as a medic, 1957 to 1959, and 1961 to 1962.  He served as an officer for four years with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. In 1968, he transferred to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation until his retirement in 1989.  He served with the NCSBI as the district special agent in charge for the Asheville, Charlotte, Hickory districts, and was the director of security at Biltmore Estate two years after retirement.  Charles volunteered with Haywood Christian Ministries for 20 years and with Hospitality Houses for Carolinas Medical Center and Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Clark Chambers; one daughter, Rachel Seeley, of Waynesville; a grandson, William Gregory Proctor, of Waynesville; and one granddaughter, Katherine Victoria Proctor of Waynesville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 15, in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Allen officiating and grandson Will Proctor delivering the eulogy.  Burial will follow at Holly Springs Church in Bryson City.  The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening.
