CLYDE — Charles Robert “Cookie” Shuler, 71, of Shelton Road, passed away Sunday, July 20, 2014.

Mr. Shuler was a native of Jackson County. He was the son of the late Henry Asbury Shuler and the late Ila Beasley Shuler. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Minnie Shuler, and Arvan and Cynthia Beasley.

Charles retired as a warehouse supervisor from Dayco with 37 years of dedicated service.  He was a founding member and deacon of Emmanuel Baptist Church. He was ordained as a Baptist church minister after receiving the call to preach Jan. 3, 1974. He pastored Big Ridge Baptist Church from May 1976 to June 1980, and Red Bank Baptist Church from June 1980 to September 1983.  He was a loyal member of the Clyde Boy Scouts Troop #309 for 25 years, a Round Table commissioner, treasurer and Silver Beaver Award Recipient presented by Pres. Bill Clinton. His dedicated service to the Clyde Lions Club was from 1986 until present. He held the Lions Club president position three times and was on the board of directors for the Marjorie McCune Memorial Center.

Charles was a loving husband, dad, papaw, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.

He is survived by his wife of eight years, Irene Davis Gaddis Shuler; a son, Scotty (Gail) Shuler, of Enka-Candler; daughters, Charlene Sheehan (the Rev. Maurice Sheehan), of Waynesville, and Amanda (Bradley) Jowers, of Franklin; step-daughters, Sherry (Tom) Dewees, of Sylva, and Cindy (Jeff) Hunter, of Waynesville; brothers, Marvin (Judy) Shuler, of Sylva, and Larry (Rita) Shuler, of Fort Worth, Texas; grandchildren, Paige (Mark) Worley and Cori (Justin) Jenkins, Emily (Ryan) Houston, Kelsey Shuler, Sarah (Dylan) Williams, Daniel Sheehan, Maceon and Maelyn Jowers; and great-grandchildren, Grant, Andersen, Jaxon and Jordyn, and many other family and friends who were very dear to him.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 25, at Ninevah Baptist Church in Waynesville. The Revs. Mike Leslie, J. D. Grant and Maurice Sheehan officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 24, at Crawford/Ray Funeral Home. Burial will follow at New Hope Cemetery in Sylva. Members of the Boy Scout Troop #309 and the Clyde Lions Club will serve as honorary pallbearers.

He enjoyed serving God, loving his family, fishing, genealogy and his favorite 1968 Camaro.
