CANTON — Charles Leonard Stockton, 75, of Patton Avenue, who was a loving husband, brother, and a cherished friend to many, passed away Monday, Jan. 27, 2014.
Mr. Stockton was born in Haywood County April 18, 1938 to the late Ellis E. Stockton and the late Ruth Ferguson Stockton. He had made his home in Canton all of his life where he was well known for his kind and friendly personality. Charles never met a stranger, and if you were blessed to know him, he was a true and devoted friend for life.
Charles was a dedicated employee of Smathers Supermarket for 29 and 1/2 years where he worked in the meat department as a butcher. He was also employed by Milne Maintenance Company and later worked at Burger King in Canton for 16 years. Charles was a member of Canton Presbyterian Church where he was an ordained deacon and elder, and he was also a member of the church choir. He had also most recently attended High Street Baptist Church. Charles was a former member of the North Canton Fire Department. He was an avid reader, especially of Zane Grey novels, and he was indeed a Civil War history enthusiast and had served as a member of the Civil War reenactment team. When thinking of Charles, we treasure the memory of the friendly “sparkle in his eyes” and his true caring and kind heart. He shall be deeply missed.
Surviving are the love of his life, his best friend and wife of 43 years , Nadena Morgan Stockton; his brother, Ronald E. Stockton and his wife, Barbara Stockton of Candler; an uncle, Hubert Ferguson and his wife, Juanita Ferguson of Bryson City; an aunt, Virginia Ferguson of High Point and also many dear friends.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, in the chapel of Crawford/Ray Funeral Home. The Rev. Chris Willett and Pastor Esta Jarrell will be officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens.
