Cinderella stories boost ratings at the NCAA tourney

With March Madness beginning later this month, college basketball fans are getting ready to fill out those office pool bracket sheets and to see which mid-major schools can knock off a perennial power.
But according the Nielson Ratings, those mid-major schools looking to become a Cinderella story should know that if they make it past the Sweet 16, more Americans will watch them play.
CBS reported that last year’s NCAA tournament saw an 8 percent drop in ratings compared to the 2011 tournament. CBS said this was due to most of the match-ups between traditional powers taking place on a Friday, and because there wasn’t a single contest that ended with game-winning shot. CBS stated that after a game winning shot is made, the next day’s ratings generally increase.
