Civil War relic

Phyllis McClure, Waynesville town clerk, holds a cannon ball found six years ago when sidewalks were being repaired in the White Sulphur Springs area. This was near a skirmish area where the last shot fired in the Civil War east of the Mississippi. The United Daughters of the Confederacy built a monument near the site in 1923.

McClure said when the cannon ball was first unearthed, there was a strong smell of sulphur. It has been stored in the town vault since then.
