Civil War roundtable meets Feb. 11
The February meeting of the Western North Carolina Civil War Round Table will be held Feb. 11, at a new location — the Mountain Heritage Center on the campus of WCU, in Cullowhee. Those interested may join the speaker, Peter Koch, for dinner at 5 p.m. Bogart’s in Sylva. The social hour will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Mountain Heritage Center, followed by the presentation at 7 p.m.
The presentation Koch, the Education Associate at the MHC, is titled, “Materiel Culture of the Civil War.” Koch will share 30-some artifacts from the MHC, which will be on display and explain the uses and purposes of these artifacts. The exhibits will include both civilian and militia from the antebellum period through the war and reconstruction and will be aided with multi-media when necessary. These items were donated by families from the region and were used and carried by WNC individuals during the Civil War.
Everyone is invited to come learn about one of the unusual featured items, the LaFaucheux pin-fire revolver which was carried by both Confederate and Union soldiers.
