Classic Wineseller's 2014 Summer Jazz Series concludes July 26
The Classic Wineseller’s 2014 Summer Jazz Series concludes at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 26, with a lavish four-course dinner and live jazz for $39.99 per person. To reserve a table call 452-6000 or email requests firstname.lastname@example.org with credit card information. Seating is limited.
Waynesville resident and pianist Justin W. Powell will perform with the Radiance Jazz Quartet. Powell will be joined by Tyler Kittle on tenor saxophone, Michael W. Davis on drums and bassist Grant Cuthbertson.
At age 5, Powell began studying classical piano and organ. During his formative years he took lessons with Andrew Walker, Drucilla Engle and Duncan MacMillan in the Orlando, Florida, area where he also studied voice with Murray Summerville, former organist and choirmaster at Harvard University.
For five years he studied with award-winning jazz educator, composer, and pianist Pavel Wlosok at Western Carolina University. Powell graduated with a B.A. in music from WCU in 2010.
During his professional career, Powell has performed with jazz greats Jason Marsalis; Bobby Watson, solo artist, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers; John Ellis, Charlie Hunter Group; Grant Green Jr., Steve Haines; Gary Smulyan, solo artist, Vanguard Jazz Orchestra; drummer Jon Riley, Miles Davis, Woody Herman, Vangaurd Jazz Orchestra, Bob Mintzer, etc.; Chris Cheek, Bill Frisell, Brad Meldhau, Rutter; and Andrew Clausen, Ray Charles Band, many Broadway shows; Jacob Rodriguez and Justin Ray of the Michael Buble Band, Fred Hamilton and Snarky Puppy.
Kittle received his degree in jazz studies from Western Carolina University. Before joining Mind Vs. Target in July 2008, he was a member of the popular touring Afro-beat group, The Afromotive. He has played throughout the United States and Europe with various groups and under various leaders. He speaks seven different languages and draws his inspiration from music from all over the world.
Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area, Davis is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and drummer for the Asheville-based band, The Broadcast.
