LAKE JUNALUSKA — The Fund for Haywood County, an affiliate of The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina (CFWNC), recently presented a check for $3,000 to Clothes to Kids of Haywood County to support the purchase of shoes for children in low-income households through the All God’s Children Need Shoes project.

“Over and over I have worked with families whose children came to the shop with tennis shoes that were way too small, or much worn flip flops with dirty feet, or tennis shoes that could have been thrown away a long ago,” said Sylvia Russell, Clothes to Kids president.

Russell said that the students often tell them that well-fitting tennis shoes are high on their list of priorities to feel good about themselves in school.

"Thank you for this much needed grant and for all the good work that the ‘People In Need’ grant program accomplishes," she said.

Diane Goodgame, vice president of Clothes to Kids, has witnessed the effect the program has on kids.

“I wish each of you could see the big smiles when a student finds a special pair of shoes that fits,” she said. “It is so wonderful that Clothes to Kids can now purchase shoes so students have more than one option.”

Providing shoes is just one part of the Clothes to Kids’ mission of providing complete wardrobes for low-income families at no cost to them.

Working directly with the Haywood County School system, this nonprofit uses 100 percent of its grants, donated clothes and money to provide three complete wardrobes twice a year, in spring and fall.
