CMS student in ICU after ATV accident

A 12-year-old Canton Middle School student remains in the Intensive Care Unit at Mission Hospital after a traumatic 4-wheeler accident at his home last week.

Mason Herbert and a friend were taking one last ride on the 4-wheeler before heading to the middle school football game Thursday when the unthinkable happened.

The ATV flipped backward while Herbert was driving up a hill. Although his friend managed to jump off, the vehicle landed on Herbert’s face, causing multiple fractures.

It’s been a long, painful week for Mason, who underwent an intensive surgery Monday to repair some of the fractures in his face.

But doctors told the family that the extent of his injuries means there will eventually be more surgery — and the path to recovery won’t be easy.
